Zonal flow and field generation by finite beta drift waves and kinetic drift-Alfvén waves

چکیده
A study of the generation of zonal flows and zonal magnetic fields by finite beta drift waves and kinetic drift-Alfvén waves is presented. The analysis is a generalization of recent investigations of the modulational instability for zonal flow generation by electrostatic drift waves to finite beta drift waves and kinetic drift-Alfvén waves. The drift wave driven unstable zonal flows/fields are stabilized by finite b below a critical value, due to the finite beta modification of the drift wave pump and the drift sidebands. They are, however, destabilized by coupling to the zonal field for larger b. The drift-Alfvén branch driven zonal flows/fields are found to be completely stable below a critical b, and are destabilized for larger b. These new results can find applications in a variety of laboratory and space plasma situations. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1386640#

Zonal flow and zonal magnetic field generation by finite beta drift waves: a theory for low to high transitions in tokamaks.
The understanding of low to high (L-H) transition in tokamaks has been an important area of investigation for more than a decade. Recent 3D finite beta simulations of drift-resistive ballooning modes in a flux tube geometry by Rogers et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 4396 (1998)] have provided a unique parametrization of the transition in a two-dimensional phase space. Comparison of the threshold cu...

The generation of large-scale zonal flows by small-scale electrostatic drift waves in electron temperature gradient(ETG) driven turbulence model is considered. The generation mechanism is based on the modulational instability of a finite amplitude monochromatic drift wave. The threshold and growth rate of the instability as well as the optimal spatial scale of zonal flow are obtained.

The generation of shear flow by drift waves is an important area of investigation. In a recent paper @Chen et al., Phys. Plasmas 7, 3129 ~2000!# an elegant formalism was developed for the generation of shear/zonal flows by drift waves in a toroidal plasma. The study of shear flow generation in fluids and plasmas is put into perspective. In this paper it is shown how a simple slab geometry analy...
متن کاملDynamics of Zonal Flows and Self-regulating Drift-wave Turbulence
We present a theory of zonal flow drift wave dynamics. Zonal flows are generated by modulational instability of a drift wave spectrum, and are damped by collisions. Drift waves undergo random shearing-induced refraction, resulting in increased mean square radial wavenumber. Drift waves and zonal flows together form a simple dynamical system, which has a single stable fixed point. In this state,...
